Expectations... i find that they tend to ruin things

A friend of mine in New York has this philosophy of life: to never have expectations. She used to qualify that to say, go even better, have negative expectations. This way, when something good happens, you'll be pleasantly surprised. And when something doesn't, it won't bother you. I've known her long enough to know that life doesn't really work like that for her either. It is a sad way to live. And it is human to expect and hope.

it's different, i think to have expectations than it is to be open and hopeful... i see the word expectation as having so much forceful desire built into it... i agree, it's human to desire and hope, but too much expectation can make you blind to all the myriad possibilities of things happening in unexpected ways...
